The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European non-profit, Science- and Technology-oriented Educational and Research Institution, based in Cyprus and governed by an acclaimed Board of Directors. The research agenda of the CyI is pursued at its five Research Centres, namely:

  1. The Computation-based Science and Technology Research Centre (CaSToRC)
  2. The Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Centre (STARC)
  3. The Energy Environment Water Research Centre (EEWRC)
  4. The Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre (CARE-C)
  5. The Science and Technology Driven Policy and Innovation Research Centre (STeDI-RC)

Considerable cross-centre interaction is a characteristic of the Institute’s scientific ethos.

The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated Researcher to join the Environmental Observations Department (EOD) of CARE-C Centre of Excellence on a full-time basis (100%) for its premises in Athalassas Campus, Nicosia.

The successful candidate will contribute to research activities carried out within the IM4CA and EMME-CARE EU projects, with a particular focus on the measurement, detection and quantification of atmospheric greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The work will involve the application and further development of advanced observational approaches for identifying and characterising emission sources, including mobile (e.g. drone-based) measurement strategies and field-based measurements conducted in Cyprus and internationally.

The selected candidate is expected to support current research at CyI related to the collection, processing, analysis and interpretation of atmospheric measurement data and the quantification of emissions from a range of sources. The candidate will also contribute to the planning and implementation of national and international measurement.

A strong background in atmospheric or environmental sciences, experience with emission measurements and quantification methodologies, scientific data analysis and programming, as well as the ability to contribute to high-quality scientific outputs (publications) and collaborative research activities, are essential.

Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

        • Participate in and support the planning and implementation of national and international field campaigns targeting mobile (car/drone) measurements of methane at emitting facilities in the framework of the H.E. IM4CA project.
        • Provide QA/QC methane concentration data processing and perform inverse modelling to quantify methane emissions using observational data.
        • Perform the scientific exploitation (communications, publications) of these results at international conferences and in scientific journals.

Position Specific Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in Atmospheric Sciences or related field
  • Technical expertise in the field operation of state-of-the-art GHG analyzers following international Standard Operating Procedures
  • Experience in (GHG) emission modelling and quantification
  • Demonstrate a strong technical understanding of mobile measurement strategies and methodologies for the detection and quantification of emissions.
  • Demonstrated experience in participating in field campaigns focused on emissions detection and quantification.
  • Proficiency in Matlab and/or Python with an aptitude for learning other programming languages

Position Specific Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in analyzing Emission and Environmental data
  • Knowledge of Greek will be considered an advantage, particularly for engagement with local stakeholders
