The Cyprus Institute (CyI) invites applications for the position of Associate Research Scientist in Computational Quantum Chemistry with specialization on cluster physics and chemistry at the CyI's Climate and Atmosphere Research Center (CARE-C).

The position offers excellent possibilities for professional development of highly motivated individuals in the framework of the INFRASTRUCTURES/1216/0070, NANO2LAB project, which is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund and the Republic of Cyprus through the Research Innovation Foundation (Strategic Infrastructure) as well as the CARE-C, “Centre of Excellence” in Climate and Atmosphere research for the EMME region, established the within the Cyprus Institute.

 

Description of the Position

The successful candidate will advance the CARE-C’s research and innovation agenda in its scientific focus areas (Innovation Department and/or Instrumentation for Nanoparticle Synthesis and Characterization Laboratory) through theoretical research, mathematical modelling, data analysis and numerical applications regarding the role of atomic clusters in the atmospheric environment and/or in nanomaterials for environmental applications.

The successful candidate will promote the overall scientific excellence of the Cyprus Institute in the EMME, Europe, and beyond, train young scientists to become international leaders, combine both research and innovation with strategic partners (Academia, Public stakeholders, Private partners) to develop new products/services at the closest of end-user needs.

The selected Associate Research Scientist will conduct his/her research in CARE-C, a recently established research center of the Cyprus Institute composed by ca. 80 research staff from more than 15 different nationalities, within a highly attractive working environment where English is the working language for both research and administration.

The successful candidate is expected to develop and support his/her own research line with the highest international standards, leveraging CyI and CARE-C resources and utilizing the highly competitive research facilities of the Cyprus Institute such as the Instrumentation for Nanoparticle Synthesis and Characterization Laboratory.

The appointment is for a period of 1 year, with the potential of renewal subject to performance, the needs of the Cyprus Institute and the availability of funds. An internationally competitive remuneration package will be offered, which is commensurate with the level of experience of the successful candidate.

 

Responsibilities/activities to be involved in:

  1. Performing internationally competitive scientific research through mathematical and computer modelling, contributing to data analyses in the area of atomic clusters, material sciences and atmospheric nucleation.
  2. Actively participating and ultimately leading world-class research program in atmospheric chemistry using state-of-the-art modelling tools
  3. Initiating and sustaining high-level collaborative projects with leading research institutions that conduct research in areas related to his/her respective fields;
  4. Securing financial and other resources from national and international sources;
  5. Communicating the results and implications of research conducted at CARE-C and The Cyprus Institute at all levels, including the academic community, the public at large and political and economic decision makers.

Required Qualifications

  1. The successful candidate(s) is (are) expected to be scholars of international standing with a minimum of three (3) years post-doctoral research experience with a PhD in the broader field of computational chemistry.
  2. An excellent track record of peer-review scientific publication in the top journals of their field
  3. Participation in international research programs
  4. Experience in Teaching/Mentoring young (Master/PhD) students and researchers
  5. A proven technical/scientific expertise in the modelling field
  6. Experience in raising funds from (inter)national competitive calls for research projects
  7. A minimum of three (3) years post-doctoral research experience

 

The selected candidate should:

  1. Have a demonstrated ability to work independently and the potential to become international leader in his/her discipline.
  2. Excellent interpersonal skills aimed at maintaining contacts in academic, business and governmental circles.
  3. Proficiency in spoken and written English is a prerequisite.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Working experience on international level
