The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European non-profit, Science- and Technology-oriented Educational and Research Institution, based in Cyprus and governed by an acclaimed Board of Directors. The research agenda of the CyI is pursued at its five Research Centres, namely:

  1. The Computation-based Science and Technology Research Centre (CaSToRC)
  2. The Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Centre (STARC)
  3. The Energy Environment Water Research Centre (EEWRC)
  4. The Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre (CARE-C)
  5. The Science and Technology Driven Policy and Innovation Research Centre (STeDI-RC)

Considerable cross-centre interaction is a characteristic of the Institute’s scientific ethos.

The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a new faculty member at the level of Associate or Full Professor, to join the Institute’s CARE-C Centre of Excellence on a full-time basis (100% FTE) for its premises at Athalassa’s Campus (Nicosia).

The successful candidate will be responsible for the leadership and growth of the Impact & Policy Department (IPD) of CARE-C.

The mission of the department is to translate the fundamental research generated by Environmental Observations Department (EOD) and Environmental Predictions Department (EPD) into tangible impacts, policy actions and decision-support frameworks. This is essential to CARE-C's role as a national and regional research leader.

The appointment will secure the continuation and further development of IPD's research and innovation activities. The new faculty member is expected to lead the development of IPD and to contribute to the research dynamics of CARE-C and CyI by pursuing cross-cutting collaborations with the other CARE-C departments (EOD, EPD, ETD) and with the STEDI Research Centre.

The candidate will work in Cyprus and will be offered a tenure-track or tenured position for the rank of Associate Professor, or a tenured position for the rank of Full Professor.

Applicants should specify for which ranks they want to be considered.

Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

The new faculty member will contribute to shaping the Institute’s research agenda by:

  • Lead and grow the Impact & Policy Department (IPD), strengthening CARE-C's national and regional scientific leadership in the areas of air pollution and climate change impacts.
  • Deepen strategic collaborations with governmental bodies in Cyprus and across the EMME region, enhancing evidence-based policymaking and supporting national and international priorities (e.g. EMME Climate Change Initiative).
  • Advance cross-sectoral and horizontal impact assessments of Air Pollution and/or Climate Change, in close collaboration with CyI and the STEDI Research Centre.
  • Reinforce CyI's graduate education programmes by adding impact-oriented research topics, attracting new MSc and PhD students, and expanding the Institute's capacity for policy-relevant training.
  • Attract competitive funding and lead collaborative projects at national and international (e.g. EU) levels.

Position Specific Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in Environmental / Natural Sciences, Environmental Engineering, or a closely related field (e.g. environmental policy, environmental economics, environmental health / exposure sciences)
  • Established international research reputation and experience in teaching/mentoring in the relevant scientific field.
  • Compelling records of scientific publications and presentations at international conferences, demonstrating significant contributions to the relevant scientific field.
  • Proven experience in supervising and mentoring postgraduate students, in leading a team of researchers, and in attracting competitive research funding.
  • Demonstrated experience in science-to-policy interaction with governmental, EU and/or international bodies and agencies.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, leading and managerial skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of the English language

Position Specific Desired Qualifications

  • Preferred experience includes health and socio-economic impact and environmental exposure assessment, integrated assessment modelling, decision-support and policy evaluation frameworks, and engagement with policy stakeholders and governmental bodies in Cyprus and the EMME region.
