SPECIAL SCIENTIST (Researcher) – Energy Training and Programme Development

The PV Technology Laboratory of the University of Cyprus announces one (1) vacancy for part-time Special Scientist (Researcher) to assist in developing a centralised data platform that integrates information from multiple existing databases into a harmonised, user-friendly repository. The platform will provide a single point of access for researchers and end users, enabling data retrieval and visualisation through tools such as Grafana without requiring direct access to individual databases.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

➢ A Master's degree, or current enrolment in the final (4th) year of a Bachelor's degree, in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, Informatics, or a related field.

➢ Strong knowledge of SQL and relational databases

➢ Experience with Python for data processing and automation

➢ Understanding of database design and data modelling

➢ Familiarity with ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes and data harmonisation

➢ Experience connecting to and integrating multiple database systems

➢ Basic knowledge of REST APIs (e.g. FastAPI or Flask)

➢ Familiarity with Git version control

ADDITIONAL SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

➢ Knowledge of Grafana, dashboards, or data visualisation tools is desirable

➢ Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will be responsible for the design and implementation of a scalable data integration platform that simplifies access to research data and supports future visualisation and analytics applications. In particular, the successful candidate will perform the following:

➢ Liaise with the PV Technology team to establish the specifications of the database

➢ Database design

➢ Programming for database migration

➢ Programming for parsing text data files and importing these into the new database

➢ Graphical User Interface Design and implementation for the database interface

➢ Server configuration for database hosting

EMPLOYMENT TERMS:

The position is offered on a part-time basis under a six (6)-month contract, with the possibility of renewal subject to performance and project needs. The engagement will be on an hourly basis, with a workload of up to 30 working hours per month. The gross monthly remuneration will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience and will be in the range of €17.33 to €26.00 per hour. Employee contributions to the various Government Funds will be deducted from the monthly gross amounts. 13th salary is already incorporated in the gross amount.
