Chief Accountant / Senior Accountant (Head Office Nicosia)

Marks & Spencer Cyprus a leading company in the retail industry seeks to recruit a Chief Accountant / Senior Accountant for its Head Office in Nicosia. The successful candidate will support the CFO in managing the day‑to‑day accounting, VAT, tax, and banking operations for the M&S franchise in Cyprus and Romania. The role ensures accurate financial records, timely reporting, strong controls, and full compliance with IFRS and local regulations.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Accounting & Reporting

• Maintain accurate general ledger and ensure timely month‑end close.
• Prepare and review management accounts, reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
• Manage intercompany transactions, accruals, and balance sheet integrity.
• Support preparation of statutory accounts under IFRS.

VAT, Tax & Compliance

• Prepare and submit VAT returns, VIES, and other indirect tax filings.
• Support corporate tax computations and liaise with external tax advisors.
• Ensure compliance with local accounting and tax regulations.

Banking & Treasury Support

• Perform bank reconciliations, monitor cash balances, and prepare cash flow inputs.
• Process supplier payments and maintain banking documentation.
• Support the CFO with treasury reporting and working capital analysis.

Controls & Audit

• Maintain strong internal controls, including approvals, reconciliations, and documentation.
• Prepare audit files and act as the main contact for external auditors.

Requirements

Experience & Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience in accounting or finance.
• Professional qualification (ACCA, ACA, CPA) or in progress is an advantage.
• Strong knowledge of IFRS, VAT, and tax compliance.
• Experience with ERP systems and advanced Excel skills.

Skills & Attributes

• High attention to detail and accuracy.
• Strong organisational and problem‑solving skills.
• Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
• Retail experience is an advantage but not required.
