Category : 9 months (September 2026 – May 2027).
Location : University of Cyprus, Nicosia
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics of the University of Cyprus announces a Special Scientist (Research) position in Applied Mathematics with emphasis on Stochastic Differential Equations and/or Optimization and Partial Differential Equations. Employment will be either full time (140 hours/month) or part time (98 hours/month) depending on qualifications (see below).
MINIMAL QUALIFICATIONS:
1. A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mathematics or a relevant field.
2. Expertise in the subjects contained in any of the following three groups:
• Stochastic Differential Equations, Arithmetic Methods for Solving Differential Equations, Regression Analysis, Algorithm Development in Software used for the implementation of Numerical Methods and for conducting Statistical Analyses (all at an undergraduate level).
• Partial Differential Equations, Optimization of functions of multiple real variables, use of Wolfram Mathematica or a similar Mathematical Software (all at an undergraduate level).
• Rigorous Probability Theory with emphasis on Weak Convergence of Random Variables, continuous-time Martingales and Markov Processes, Stochastic Differential Equations (preferably at a graduate level)
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: A strong background in all the subjects contained in any two of the above three groups.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The hired person will work with Dr. Nikolaos Kolliopoulos on one or more small mathematical problems that arise from two different and independent research projects: the first project has been funded by the US National Science Foundation (NSF) and aims to the development of a complete Extreme Value Theory for large systems of interacting Stochastic Differential Equations with possible applications in Finance and Neuroscience, while the second project concerns a Stochastic Optimal Control problem which is open for several decades and is studied in the framework of Machine Learning. The problems could concern both
proofs of theoretical results and combinations of numerical simulations with statistical estimations (with the use of Software). The duties of the person who will be hired will include:
1) A continuous attempt to solve the problems through: 1) studying theories and implementing methods proposed by the supervising professor, and 2) attempts to improve those methods or search for new approaches to some of the problems whenever this is needed and is considered feasible.
2) Weekly or Bi-weekly meetings with the supervising professor to discuss progress and next steps in the attempt to solve the problems.
3) Participation in the write-up of research papers concerning the problems that will be solved.
Depending on the performance of the Special Scientist who will be hired, they may be given the choice to pursue a doctoral degree (Ph.D) under the supervision of Dr. Nikolaos Kolliopoulos, after the end of this employment.
There will also be a provision for participation in a small number of international mathematical conferences, for the purpose of presenting the results that will occur from the Special Scientist’s work.
