The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European non-profit, Science- and Technology-oriented Educational and Research Institution, based in Cyprus and governed by an acclaimed Board of Directors. The research agenda of the CyI is pursued at its five Research Centres, namely:

  1. The Computation-based Science and Technology Research Centre (CaSToRC)
  2. The Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Centre (STARC)
  3. The Energy Environment Water Research Centre (EEWRC)
  4. The Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre (CARE-C)
  5. The Science and Technology Driven Policy and Innovation Research Centre (STeDI-RC)

Considerable cross-centre interaction is a characteristic of the Institute’s scientific ethos.

The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated Researcher to join the Impacts and Policy Department (IPD) of CARE-C Centre of Excellence on a full-time basis (100%) for its premises in Athalassas Campus.

The selected candidate will join a research team that aims to develop early-warning support systems for assessing climate-sensitive vector-borne disease risk.

More specifically, the successful candidate will engage with the VEClim project, which aims to advance the development and operational use of mathematical models for climate-sensitive vector dynamics and vector-borne diseases through an interdisciplinary and collaborative approach. The project focuses on developing an open modelling platform that brings together predictive models, climate and surveillance data, and early-warning applications. VEClim aims to support researchers and public-health stakeholders by providing reusable modelling resources and tools for assessing current and future changes in vector activity and disease risk.

The selected candidate is expected to support current research at CyI on the development, calibration and implementation of mathematical models of vector population dynamics and vector-borne disease transmission. For this, a strong foundation in mathematical modelling, scientific programming and data analysis, as well as the ability to produce well-documented modelling software and high-quality research outputs, are essential.

Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

        • Perform internationally competitive scientific research on mathematical modelling of climate-sensitive vector dynamics and vector-borne disease risk.
        • Contribute to the development, calibration and implementation of predictive models, their integration into the VEClim platform, and the development of early-warning applications.

Position Specific Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in Life, Health or Mathematical Sciences, Public Health, Engineering, or a related field
  • Proficiency in Python and/or R, with an aptitude for learning other programming languages
  • Experience in mathematical modeling, quantitative data analysis and visualization
  • Strong understanding of mathematical, computational and biological concepts
  • Experience in developing modeling tools or user interfaces

Position Specific Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in analyzing environmental data, particularly weather and climate datasets
  • Experience with biological, epidemiological or vector surveillance data
  • Experience with reproducible scientific workflows, version control and collaborative software development
  • Experience with GIS and geospatial analysis
  • Relevant publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals
  • Knowledge of Greek will be considered an advantage, particularly for engagement with local stakeholders

Salary Band: CYI4(1-9)

Position’s Starting Salary: CYI4.1 - €37641.89, CYI4.2 - €39457.60, CYI4.3 - €41273.31, CYI4.4 - €43089.02

Benefits:

Among other benefits, the Cyprus Institute offers flexible and remote work, additional paid leave for supporting staff work-life balance, provident fund membership and group medical and life insurance membership.

Application

Applications can be submitted through The Cyprus Institute Exelsys Platform (https://bit.ly/3HDLRTw), by following the instructions provided. Applicants should submit:

  1. A curriculum vitae, including a short letter of interest/vision statement,
  2. List of publications/work portfolio
  3. List of two (2) referees (including contact information)

All documentation should be in English and in PDF format.

For further information, please contact Dr Kamil Erguler ([email protected]). Please note that applications which do not fulfill the required qualifications and do not follow the announcement’s guidelines will not be considered.

*Recruitment will continue until the application process is marked as closed.
