The Floor and Public Areas Supervisor supervises and supports the smooth day-to-day running of Housekeeping guest rooms and public areas. The role focuses on delivering the highest possible standards of service to all hotel guests (internal and external), through effective leadership of the team, and the management of departmental resources, equipment and provisions. The supervisor is also expected to be proactive in maintaining and/or improving department profitability in line with hotel policies, procedures and standards.
Key accountabilities
- Supervise daily Housekeeping operations for guest rooms and public areas, ensuring work is delivered within budget and to the highest standards, and coordinating resources so issues are resolved efficiently.
- Monitor staffing levels and ensure rotas align with revenue and business levels, staff needs, starters/leavers and labour standards, while controlling labour costs appropriately.
- Supervise the daily work of the team, ensuring working times, grooming, conduct, uniforms, assigned duties, opening and closing tasks, set-ups and all preparations are completed according to established procedures.
- Maintain a full understanding of department operations, the layout of areas, and the location and functioning of all operational equipment.
- Maintain strong internal and external customer service by interacting with guests, identifying and anticipating needs, responding promptly to feedback, keeping guest preference files, and escalating concerns when a guest is not satisfied.
- Support the team through training and development, encouraging motivation, teamwork and a sense of ownership.
- Keep the workstation organised and tidy, and report issues to supervisors.
- Implement and ensure training so team members demonstrate knowledge and ability in standards, daily tasks, guest etiquette, facilities, amenities, products and services, event and room/floor layouts, and methods of preparation, presentation, delivery, cleanliness and service, while continuously monitoring and improving performance.
- Organise daily work by issuing the relevant work order forms.
- Monitor arrivals and departures; supervise the condition and readiness of arrival rooms; issue completed Housekeeping reports to Front Office; and update the computer system with reports such as arrivals, departures, guest lists, actual check-ins and room status.
- Handle guest clothing for washing and dry cleaning, lost and found items for guests and staff, and hotel linen, in line with established procedures.
- Report damages, record them using the maintenance report, and liaise directly with the Maintenance department.
- Ensure team members confidently communicate, merchandise, recommend and advise guests on products, facilities and services, using sales techniques to maximise revenue.
- Manage other daily duties, including supervising horticultural activities, responding to customer complaints efficiently, and making necessary improvements with care and in accordance with procedures.
- Actively participate in operations and inspections to monitor department activities, maintain attention to detail, and uphold quality and standards.
- Assist with stock counts and ensure the department has adequate supplies of equipment, resources and provisions.
- Ensure new orders reflect costs and business levels, and that strict controls are followed for deliveries, handling, storage and stock rotation.
- Maintain awareness of departmental costs and communicate cost and financial status to the team to increase involvement and commitment.
- Inspect Housekeeping front and back areas daily to ensure cleanliness, good physical condition and functioning equipment.
- Implement the hotel sales, promotions and entertainment plan, and contribute new ideas.
