The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European non-profit, Science- and Technology-oriented Educational and Research Institution, based in Cyprus and governed by an acclaimed Board of Directors. The research agenda of the CyI is pursued at its five Research Centres, namely:

  1. The Computation-based Science and Technology Research Centre (CaSToRC)
  2. The Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Centre (STARC)
  3. The Energy Environment Water Research Centre (EEWRC)
  4. The Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre (CARE-C)
  5. The Science and Technology Driven Policy and Innovation Research Centre (STeDI-RC)

Considerable cross-centre interaction is a characteristic of the Institute’s scientific ethos.

The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated Researcher to join the Institute’s STARC Centre on a full-time basis (100% FTE) for its premises at Athalassas Campus.

The successful candidate will be involved in advancing digital approaches to the documentations, management, analysis and simulation of the historic built environment through Heritage Building Information Modelling (HBIM), parametric modelling, reality-based documentation, information management and interoperable digital workflows.

The position focuses on developing and implementing innovative methodologies for digital heritage documentation, semantic enrichment of heritage information, standards-based interoperability, and the development of digital twins with applications in conservation, building performance assessment, and sustainable heritage management.

Particular emphasis will be given on BIM-based information management, open data standards, interoperability on digital platforms, and the development of scalable methodologies for managing complex heritage datasets. The role will also support the translation of research outcomes into practical applications for heritage conservation, decision-making, and sustainable management of the built environment.

The successful candidate is expected to demonstrate a strong academic and research background, proven expertise in digital heritage technologies, BIM-based methodologies, and interdisciplinary research, together with excellent analytical, problem-solving, communication, and collaborative skills.

Please click here for the position’s detailed job description, including general responsibilities, requirements and other details related to the position.

Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

  • Developing and implementing BIM workflows for historic buildings and sites, integrating archival, survey, multidisciplinary heritage information and diagnostic data.
  • Developing and evaluating digital methodologies for the documentation, analysis, conservation, and sustainable management of historic buildings, including applications related to building performance assessment and environmental sustainability.
  • Supporting interoperability and information exchange between BIM authoring environments (Autodesk Revit), digital heritage platforms, and data repositories, with particular emphasis on open standards, IFC-based workflows, and multidisciplinary data integration.
  • Authoring custom scripts or visual-programming routines for optimizing parametric and computational workflows to support heritage information modelling, data processing, model enrichment, and the integration of heterogeneous datasets.
  • Implementing FAIR-compliant data-management plans, utilizing ontologies and controlled vocabularies (e.g., CIDOC CRM, Getty AAT) to maximize re-use and long-term preservation.
  • Publishing peer-reviewed articles, technical reports and open datasets/workflows, and present findings at international conferences/workshops and non-specialized audiences, including heritage professionals and policymakers.
  • Contributing to competitive grant proposals.
  • Collaborating with interdisciplinary teams across CyI research centers.

Position Specific Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in Architecture, Heritage Science, or closely related discipline with demonstratable focus on digital applications in historic built environment.
  • Documented expertise in HBIM, including digital documentation, model development, scan-to-BIM techniques and parametric family creation.
  • Programming/visual-programming skills for data remapping, conversion and annotation (Python, Dynamo, Grasshopper, or similar).
  • Experience with building energy performance simulation including familiarity with digital methodologies supporting energy and environmental performance studies.
  • Proven track record of peer-reviewed publications in digital heritage and building simulation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of BIM-based information management, data exchange, and interoperability, including open standards such as IFC, structured metadata, and multidisciplinary information integration within the AEC sector.

Position Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced proficiency in BIM software and visual programming (Revit/Dynamo, Rhinoceros/Grasshopper).
  • Familiarity with cultural heritage documentation methodologies, information standards, metadata schemas, and structured approaches to digital heritage data management.
  • Knowledge of international BIM information-management standards and frameworks, including ISO 19650, openBIM principles, and information exchange requirements
  • Applied research on energy-efficient retrofitting of historic buildings or passive-design strategies.
  • Experience with cultural heritage data management and metadata enrichment.
  • Experience with semantic annotation.
  • Experience in AI architectural heritage datasets.
  • Experience with project management, deliverables preparation and international teams’ coordination.
  • Significant experience in EU grant writing for competitive funding.

Duration of appointment:

The initial period of the appointment will be for 24 months with the possibility of renewal, depending on performance and availability of funds.
