Post-doctoral Research Fellow in Applied Machine Learning and AI (ref. no. CaSToRC_PDF_26_07)
The Cyprus InstituteDeadline for applications: 19/07/2026
Application process open *
The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European non-profit, Science- and Technology-oriented Educational and Research Institution, based in Cyprus and governed by an acclaimed Board of Directors. The research agenda of the CyI is pursued at its five Research Centres, namely:
- The Computation-based Science and Technology Research Centre (CaSToRC)
- The Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Centre (STARC)
- The Energy Environment Water Research Centre (EEWRC)
- The Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre (CARE-C)
- The Science and Technology Driven Policy and Innovation Research Centre (STeDI-RC)
Considerable cross-centre interaction is a characteristic of the Institute’s scientific ethos.
The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated individual to join the Institute’s CaSToRC Centre as a post-doctoral Fellow in the areas of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence.
The successful candidate will conduct high-quality research at the interface of machine-learning methodology and impactful applications, combining original scientific work with the development and rigorous evaluation of AI/ML methods and systems.
The fellow’s initial activities will be supported primarily through Pharos-CY, the AI Factory Antenna project of Cyprus, and HYPPOS-AI, an RIF-funded project concerning the use of deep-learning technologies in chemical-engineering and manufacturing plants. These initiatives will provide concrete research challenges, data, interdisciplinary collaborations, and pathways to real-world impact, but they will not define the full scientific scope of the position.
The successful candidate will be encouraged to develop complementary research directions, initiate new collaborations, and pursue publishable work across machine learning and artificial intelligence, in alignment with the broader research agenda of CaSToRC. The position is particularly suited to researchers who are interested both in advancing ML methods and in validating them in demanding real-world settings. The fellow will collaborate with ML researchers, computational scientists, domain experts, and industrial partners, and will have opportunities to contribute to new proposals and future research initiatives.
Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:
-
-
-
- Conduct original research in machine learning and artificial intelligence, including methodological research motivated by challenging real-world applications.
- Contribute to technical activities in applied R&D projects, initially including Pharos-CY and HYPPOS-AI, covering problem formulation, data analysis, model development, experimental evaluation, and prototype validation.
- Design rigorous and reproducible computational experiments, including appropriate baselines, evaluation protocols, robustness analyses, and interpretation of results.
- Publish research findings in leading peer-reviewed conferences and journals and present results at scientific, technical, and project meetings.
-
-
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary researchers and industrial partners to translate application requirements into well-defined ML research questions and technically sound solutions.
Position Specific Required Qualifications:
- PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Computational Science, or another relevant field in the Natural Sciences or Engineering with a substantial machine-learning research component.
- Evidence of the ability to conduct high-quality research in machine learning, artificial intelligence, or a closely related field, demonstrated through publications, the doctoral thesis, preprints, software, datasets, or other substantive research outputs.
- Strong understanding of modern machine-learning methods and experimental methodology.
- Good programming skills, preferably in Python, and experience with at least one widely used machine-learning or deep-learning framework.
- Ability to formulate open-ended research or technical problems, develop appropriate methodological approaches, and evaluate them critically.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to interdisciplinary and collaborative projects.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
Position Specific Preferred Qualifications:
- Expertise in one or more areas of machine learning or AI, such as deep learning, generative AI, representation learning, graph machine learning, time-series modelling, computer vision, scientific machine learning, uncertainty quantification, trustworthy AI, or model evaluation.
- Experience applying ML to scientific, engineering, industrial, or other data-intensive problems.
- Experience working with complex real-world data, such as sensor, process, temporal, multimodal, or heterogeneous datasets.
- Familiarity with reproducible research software, GPU or HPC environments, cloud computing, data pipelines, or MLOps practices.
- Experience collaborating with domain experts or industrial partners.
