Post-doctoral Research Fellow in Greenhouse Gas (Methane) modelling in the Eastern Mediterranean & the Middle East (ref. no. CARE-C_PDF_24_06)

#TC66639
Τύπος: Πλήρης Απασχόληση / Συμβόλαιο
The Cyprus Institute

Closing Date: 09/05/2024

The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European non-profit Science and Technology oriented Educational and Research Institution based in Cyprus and led by an acclaimed Board of Trustees. The research agenda of the CyI is pursued at its five Research Centres, among which, the Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre (CARE-C), a 100-research staff Center of Excellence established by the European Commission and the Cyprus Government to address Air Pollution and Climate Change issues in the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East (EMME) region.

The Impacts and Policy Department (IPD) of CARE-C, under the EMME-CARE and AVENGERS project will provide essential insights into key processes of the Earth System, consisting of the:

  • Assessment of air pollutants and greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions from anthropogenic activities over Cyprus and the EMME region,
  • Investigation of the radiation forcing of natural aerosols (mineral dust) and its relevance for GHG climate forcing,
  • Assessment of CH4 spatial-temporal distribution emission anomalies over EMME.

The CyI invites applications for highly motivated and qualified individual to join the IPD of CARE-C as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow. The successful candidate will contribute to the research objectives of the IPD, within the framework of national and/or international research projects with a focus on Methane emissions over the EMME region; atmospheric measurements of greenhouse gas concentrations, 3-D chemistry transport models, emission inventories, and statistical analysis tools, and GHG mapping and policy-oriented applications.

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to develop in an international research environment and work in collaboration with linked academic institutions in the EMME region with long-term career prospect at the Cyprus Institute.

The Post-doctoral fellow will be based at the Cyprus Institute and work under the direct supervision of CyI and CEA-LSCE professors and will have to spend a part of his/her working contract at LSCE (Gif/Yvette, France) to be trained.

The initial period of the appointment will be for a duration of 24 months. Post-Doctoral Fellowships can be renewed depending to performance and availability of funds for a fixed-term period. An internationally competitive remuneration package will be offered, which is commensurate with the level of experience of the successful candidate.

  1. Collection and processing of observational satellite and ground based data relevant to methane and other GHG over EMME
  2. Application of inversion model CIF CHIMERE with a regional domain covering the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle east region
  3. Development and validation of GHG emission inventories from global to regional/urban scales with ground and remote sensing data
  4. Presentation of results in conferences and meetings and participation in journal publications
  5. Contribution to research proposal preparation, project (scientific) reporting & project management
  6. Supervision and guidance of Research Assistants and Students

Required Qualifications

  1. PhD in Natural or Mathematical Sciences and/or Environmental Science or Engineering or related field
  2. Publications in peer-review scientific journals
  3. Publications in peer-review conference proceedings
  4. Presentations in scientific conferences
  5. 3 years relevant experience (including PhD research)
  6. Understanding of physical and mathematical concepts
  7. Ability to work with complex computer modeling codes
  8. Willingness to travel and spend time in Partner organizations
  9. Excellent knowledge of the English language, both verbal and in writing.
  10. Highly motivated, with the ability to work independently or in a group.
  11. Good communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to adapt to a multicultural, multinational environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with processing of observational data (ground, remote sensing, lidar, satellite)
  • Experience of running atmospheric composition models for GHGs / pollutants
  • Understanding of transport, emissions, and chemical processes impacting atmospheric composition
