The Cyprus Institute invites here applications for a highly qualified and motivated individual to join the Institute as Associate Research Scientist in UAV-based atmospheric observationsin the CARE-C Centre of Excellence (

Under the Supervision of the CARE-C Director and Head of the Unmanned System Research Laboratory (USRL,, the Associate Research Scientist will coordinate the science-based research activities of USRL. The successful candidate will also have a major contribution to these scientific projects with an aim to provide innovative solutions to perform cost-effective in-situ observations of gas/aerosol using novel UAV-sensor systems. The successful candidate will be working under the Environmental Observations Department of the CARE-C. She/He will be working closely with the USRL technical staff which is composed by a highly qualified team of electronic / mechanical / system engineers and professional pilots. The successful candidate will be responsible in organizing/participating in UAV-based field campaigns (in Cyprus and abroad) and contribute to the overall scientific exploitation of experimental data through dissemination (publications, communications). The candidate will also have the opportunity to engage in teaching activities within the Masters and PhD programs of the CyI (including hands-on / practical lessons). The expectation is that the candidate will further develop her/his research within the Cyprus Institute and contribute to the preparation (and coordination) of competitive national and international (e.g. Horizon Europe) proposals, and supervise young researchers working on these projects.

The initial period of the appointment will be for a duration of 24-months with the possibility of renewal, depending on performance and availability of funds. An internationally competitive remuneration package will be offered, which is commensurate with the level of experience of the successful candidate.

Responsibilities/activities to be involved in:

  1. Scientific coordination of the USRL atmospheric research activities and projects
  2. Acquisition, analysis and validation of scientific data using UAV-based atmospheric sensors
  3. Scientific exploitation/dissemination of experimental data
  4. Preparation/Participation of (inter)national field experiments
  5. Supervision of Master and Ph.D. students
  6. Development of national and international collaboration networks
  7. Initiating and sustaining high-level collaborative projects with leading research institutions that conduct research in areas related to climate change and air pollution
  8. Seeking financial and other resources from national and international sources
  9. Communicating the results and implications of research conducted at CARE-C and The CyI.

Required Qualifications

  1. PhD in Eexperimental atmospheric sciences (in-situ and/or remote sensing techniques)
  2. At least 2 Publications in scientific journals as first author
  3. Presentations in scientific conferences
  4. Experience on preparing/participating in international atmospheric research campaigns
  5. Independent and proactive thinking
  6. Teaching record
  7. At least 5 years of research experience in experimental aerosol sciences including PhD studies
  8. High interpersonal skills and ability to work independently and in a team
  9. Programming skills (OriginLab, Matlab, Python)
  10. Experience on working on remote sensing retrievals
  11. Excellent knowledge of the English language, both verbal and writing
  12. Strong analytical and organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Driving License
  • Knowledge of the Greek Language will be an advantage
