The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European Non-profit Science and Technology oriented Educational and Research Institution based in Cyprus and led by an acclaimed Board of Trustees. The research agenda of the CyI is pursued at its four Research Centres: The Computation-based Science and Technology Research Centre (CaSToRC), the Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Centre (STARC), the Energy Environment Water Research Centre (EEWRC) and the Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre (CARE-C). Considerable cross-centre interaction is a characteristic of the Institute’s culture.

The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated individual to join the Institute as a Post Doctoral Research Fellow to work for the Erasmus+ funded project “Climate change, cities, communities and Equity in health” (Cli-CC.HE) and the Horizon 2020 project “Collective Intelligence for Energy Flexibility” (COLLECTiEF). Cli-CC.HE is an interdisciplinary project which aims to bridge education, scientific research and professional practice on the topic of urban health as one of the most effective markers of any city’s sustainable development. COLLECTiEF aims at developing solutions to foster the smartness of existing buildings by adopting occupant-centric control algorithms for promoting comfortable and energy efficient grid-interacting buildings, which can withstand with the expected impacts of climate change.

The successful candidate will carry out research on adaptation and mitigation strategies against the impacts of climate change on urban health and on intelligent control algorithms for climate resilient, energy flexible and efficient, comfortable buildings. Moreover, the successful candidate will be supporting the deployment of measurement campaigns, will be engaging with different stakeholders and collaborating with project partners in carrying out administrative tasks, organizing and hosting dissemination events. The candidate is expected to be reporting findings in ways both appealing to a wider audience (e.g., blog posts, presentations, one-pagers), as well as through academic contributions.

The initial period of the appointment will be for a duration of 24 months with the possibility of renewal, depending on performance and availability of funds. An internationally competitive remuneration package will be offered, which is commensurate with the level of experience of the successful candidate.

 

Responsibilities/activities to be involved in:

  1. Conducting research on mitigation and adaptation strategies against climate change in urban environments
  2. Planning and hosting project meetings or events with local stakeholders
  3. Identify, involve and engage with local stakeholders of projects’ related activities
  4. Writing scientific publications and project reports

 

Required Qualifications

  1. PhD in Environmental Sciences or related topics
  2. At least 2 peer reviewed publications
  3. At least 1 paper in conference proceedings
  4. At least 1 presentation at international conference
  5. One published sample of writing for a broader audience (blog post, op/ed article, etc.).
  6. Familiarity with urban sustainability/vulnerability
  7. Familiarity with urban health and climate change
  8. Editorial competences (e.g. writing, storytelling, proofreading, research, grammar, and vocabulary)
  9. 3 years of research (incl. PhD)
  10. Experience in research related to natural and social sciences
  11. Excellent analytical, organizational and planning skills
  12. Excellent knowledge of English and Greek language both verbal and written
  13. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with dissemination events/public outreach
  • Proved capacity to involve civil society
