The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European non-profit Science and Technology oriented Educational and Research Institution based in Cyprus and led by an acclaimed Board of Trustees. The research agenda of the CyI is pursued at its five Research Centres: The Computation-based Science and Technology Research Centre (CaSToRC), the Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Centre (STARC), the Energy Environment Water Research Centre (EEWRC), the Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre (CARE-C), and the Science and Technology Driven Policy and Innovation Research Centre (STeDI-RC). The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated individual to join the Institute as Research Technical Assistant in Heritage Science in the STARC. The successful candidate will be a member of the APAC Laboratories team in conducting technical research support in Heritage Science, developing instrumentation and delivering associated services and support. The successful candidate will work in an international, multi-disciplinary and pluri-cultural context and in collaboration with major European research institutes, such as ECHOES and E-RIHS IP, contributing to all aspects related to open-data.
The initial period of the appointment will be for 24 months with the possibility of renewal, depending on performance and availability of funds. An internationally competitive remuneration package will be offered, which is commensurate with the level of experience of the successful candidate.
Responsibilities/activities to be involved in:
- Technical research support in Heritage Science, primarily in the domain of hyper-spectral imaging for materials characterization, preventive conservation and diagnostics, using non-destructive and non-invasive methods.
- Maintain and help develop hyper-spectral imaging instrumentation.
- Conduct experimentation procedures and develop related protocols and workflows.
- Provide Art Characterization services at the APAC laboratories, implement workflows and protocols for the smooth operation of the APAC Labs.
- Contribute to educational and outreach activities of the APAC Labs according to specific needs.
- Assist in project planning, providing input on feasibility and timelines.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Heritage Science-related domain such as physics, chemistry, chemical engineering, conservation sciences, material sciences, or related field.
- Proven capability to publish scientific and technical reports.
- Proven capability to contribute to the development of experimental instrumentation.
- Knowledge of how to operate various hyper-spectral imaging instrumentation.
- Programming skills in Python and Matlab.
- Experience in operating and maintaining hyper-imaging laboratory equipment and performing laboratory-related activities.
- Experience in setting-up mobile instrumentation in various in-situ settings and conducting data acquisition campaigns.
- Experience in processing multi-sensors data and applying various data processing methods.
- Excellent knowledge of the English language, both verbal and writing.
- Demonstrated development ability, outstanding organizational, analytical, problem solving and communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to adapt to a multicultural/multinational environment.
