The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European non-profit Science and Technology oriented Educational and Research Institution based in Cyprus and led by an acclaimed Board of Trustees. The research agenda of the CyI is pursued at its five Research Centres: The Computation-based Science and Technology Research Centre (CaSToRC), the Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Centre (STARC), the Energy Environment Water Research Centre (EEWRC), the Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre (CARE-C), and the Science and Technology Driven Policy and Innovation Research Centre (STeDI-RC). Considerable cross-centre interaction is a characteristic of the Institute’s culture.
The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated individual to join the Institute as Post-Doctoral Fellow in Heritage Science in the STARC. The successful candidate will be a member of the APAC Laboratories team, conducting research in Heritage Science, primarily in non-invasive and non-destructive art charaterisation, mentoring early-stage researchers, and graduate students, and will be engaged in relevant EU-funded projects, such as ECHOES and E-RIHS IP. The successful candidate will work in an international, multi-disciplinary and pluri-cultural context and in collaboration with major European research institutes.
In general, the successful candidate is expected to:
- Conduct research to further develop research skills and competencies, and publishing novel and significant results in selective peer-reviewed journals and conferences.
- Contribute to all aspects of sponsored Research, Innovation and/or Development projects (including conducting research, co-authoring publications, implementing deliverables, reporting activities, dissemination activities, etc).
- Contribute to new grant proposals preparation.
The initial period of the appointment will be for 24 months with the possibility of renewal, depending on performance and availability of funds. An internationally competitive remuneration package will be offered, which is commensurate with the level of experience of the successful candidate.
General Responsibilities:
- Conduct research, innovation and development activities based on project requirements.
- Collect and analyze data as stipulated by project specifications and supervision.
- Write research papers in collaboration with the line manager and other peers.
- Present results at conferences and meetings and contribute to journal publications.
- Contribute to research proposal preparation, scientific reporting, and project management.
- Provide mentoring and guidance to Graduate Research Fellows and Research Engineers, if applicable.
- Contribute to educational and dissemination activities (such as focused lectures, public seminars or targeted talks), promoting education and external recognition at the national and international levels.
- Contribute to planning and organization of Center-level and Institute-level internal and external events (such as workshops, conferences) to promote external recognition at the national and international levels.
- Provide independent input related to research directions, methodologies, etc.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct research in Heritage Science, primarily in the domain of hyper-spectral imaging for materials characterization, preventive conservation and diagnostics, using non-destructive and non-invasive methods.
- Attract competitive funding through externally funded projects and supervise their implementation.
- Participate in related externally funded projects and actively contribute to their deliverables.
- Publish in domain-related peer-review journals.
- Provide Art Characterization services at the APAC laboratories, develop workflows and protocols for the smooth operation of the APAC Labs.
- Contribute to the academic and professional training of related research technical support staff, research assistants, PhD and MSc students.
- Contribute to educational and outreach activities of the APAC Labs according to specific needs.
- Stay up to date with the latest research trends and technologies in Heritage Sciences (primarily inorganic investigations using non-invasive and non-destructive methods) and apply them to enhance our workflows and processes.
- Collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team devoted to the study, conservation and valorization of Cultural Heritage and works of art.
- Assist in estimating and planning projects, providing input on feasibility and timelines.
Required Qualifications
- PhD in a Heritage Science-related domain (physics, chemistry, chemical engineering, conservation sciences, material sciences, etc.).
- Relevant experience in research or academia.
- Relevant publications in scientific journals or peer-reviewed conferences.
- Participation in scientific conferences.
- Minimum of two years of post-doctoral fellowship in a related domain.
- Proven capability to publish in scientific journals.
- Proven capability to deliver research outcomes at scientific events.
- Proven capability to attract competitive grants.
- Knowledge of how to operate various hyper-spectral imaging instrumentation.
- Basic programming skills (e.g. Python, Matlab).
- Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary environment related to Cultural Heritage.
- Experience in operating and maintaining hyper-imaging laboratory equipment and laboratory-related activities.
- Experience in setting-up mobile instrumentation in various in-situ setting and conduct data acquisition campaigns.
- Experience in processing multi-sensors data and apply various data processing methods.
- Experience in conducting peer-reviewed research in the relevant field.
- Demonstrated record of publications and conference presentations.
- Ability to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team.
- Proficiency in English (written and verbal).
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
