The Cyprus lnstitute {Cyl) is a non-profit science and technology educational and research institution based in Cyprus and led by an acclaimed Board of Trustees. The Cyprus Institute invites applications for highly qualified and motivated individuals to join the Institute as Research Engineers to support the EuroHPC National Competence Center (NCC) of Cyprus.

The successful candidates will be part of the High Level Support Team (HLST) of the NCC and will be working in projects that involve High-Performance Computing (HPC), “Big Data” management and analytics, and/or large-scale Data Science (DS) and Machine Learning (ML) projects. The goal of these projects will be to enable academic, public and private organizations in Cyprus to develop their HPC, “Big Data”, and/or DS/ML skills and to benefit from the growing potential of these technologies.

The candidate will be working primarily with CyI Faculty and Research staff as well as with external organizations in achieving the previous goal.

This position offers a unique opportunity for exciting work using state-of-the-art HPC, “Big Data”, and DS/ML methods, and interacting with both researchers and users of these technologies.

The appointment is for a period of 2 years, with the possibility of renewal subject to performance and the availability of funds. An internationally competitive remuneration package will be offered, which is commensurate with the level of experience of the successful candidate.

Responsibilities/activities to be involved in:

• Engage in research activities, contributing to projects that relate to at least one of the following: HPC, “Big Data”, and/or DS/ML
• Optimize and adapt existing software to benefit from HPC, “Big Data”, and/or DS/ML
• Provide consultancy to academic groups, public organizations and the private sector on new computing architectures, programming models, and computational methods
• Contribute to the design and implementation of projects that target the uptake of HPC, “Big Data”, and/or DS/ML in academia, industry, and government
• Address users’ application issues by providing high-level support
• Be involved in training and user-support events
• Collaborate with other groups within the EuroCC2 program

Required Qualifications

• BSc in Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Data Science or any other relevant field
• Some evidence of independent work (i.e., not a course project), in the form of a MSc or undergraduate project, in at least one of the following areas is required: HPC, Big Data, or DS/ML
• Understanding of fundamental concepts in HPC, Data Management & Analytics, DS/ML
• Proficient programming skills (preferably in Python) and some experience with at least one of the following: a) parallel programming, b) data analytics, c) deep learning frameworks
• Experience in using libraries such as NumPy, pandas, scikit-learn and PyTorch/TensorFlow
• Experience with processing large and noisy datasets
• Ability to present technical concepts to non-technical users
• Understanding and application of good software engineering practices
• Good interpersonal and communication skills
• Excellent knowledge of oral and written English and Greek

Preferred Qualifications (not mandatory)

• MSc in Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Data Science or any other relevant field
• Experience in parallel programming (MPI, OpenMP, CUDA)
• Experience with git repository
• Experience with Linux-based systems
• Previous experience in a research/academic institution
• Previous experience in writing technical reports
