About the Position
The Centre is seeking for a Laboratories Manager Position to join its fast-growing team of passionate and enthusiastic professionals. The Laboratories Manager will play an important role in ensuring the smooth running of the Centre.
 
The Laboratories Manager will provide leadership and oversight of the Research Department Laboratories and the activities that those facilities support. Currently the laboratories will be equipped with an XR stage for Virtual Film Production, a Virtual Reality Studio and an optical Motion Capture System (in the near future volumetrics and robotics equipment will be added). This position requires training and experience in the use, design, maintenance, and replacement of scientific equipment and their software, hardware, infrastructure, and workflows.
 
The laboratory activities include but are not limited to independent studies and research activities. The Lab Manager will be responsible for the laboratories' daily operations including, but not limited to, safety training and compliance of users, coordinating use by CYENS employees and assisting researchers and their groups in the use of equipment and the enactment of workflows involving the equipment and the laboratories. The Lab Manager will be reporting to the Research Director.
 
Responsibilities of Laboratories Manager
 

  • Supervise and support the daily operations of Research Departments laboratories that are used for research.

  • Learn to operate existing and new equipment and their workflows

  • Create, build, purchase, maintain and upgrade equipment and their workflows in collaboration with the Operations and IT departments.

  • Assist researchers, visitors, and other employees in the use of equipment and their workflows

  • Troubleshoot and fix equipment and workflows that fail

  • Create and maintain clean, safe, orderly, and accessible laboratories

  • Create and maintain an up-to-date inventory of equipment and critical software and data

  • Manage the budgets associated with the laboratories in collaboration with Operations and IT department

  • Liaise with researchers of other programs and departments to coordinate the sharing of laboratories, software, and equipment with and among different Research Groups

  • Supervise and support laboratory safety, including CYENS Centre of Excellence safety regulations, tracking the safety training, identifying, and removing unsafe practices, supporting safe conduct and trained people using the facility, and reporting incidents as required to the management.

  • Act as the interface between CYENS researchers and studios and film production companies as needed to help them learn and use the laboratory facilities to their full potential.

  • Identify bottlenecks and limitations in the Virtual Production workflow and help to design tools and develop solutions.
     

General qualifications and requirements

  1. University Degree (Bachelor’s Degree or Degree of a level equivalent to Bachelor’s Degree) or Diploma or Certificate or other study title or qualifications in computer science, engineering, mass media, game development or relevant field.

  2. Broad base of hardware and software IT knowledge.

  3. Good understanding on on-set roles and decision-making channels.

  4. Working knowledge of Virtual Reality and Virtual Production will be considered an advantage.

  5. Experience in Virtual Production & Video Game production will be considered an advantage

  6. Understanding of technologies like camera tracking, motion capture, image projection, LED walls, video capture, real time gaming engines, robotics, IoT sensors will be considered an advantage.

  7. Computer literate.

  8. Language requirements: Excellent written and oral English-language skills will be required.

  9. For non-EU applicants a work permit will be required
